"Code Blue! She's gone into full cardiac arrest!" Dr. Jesse Travis barked to the nurses surrounding him. One bye one, he gave them orders. Time seemed to be rushing bye as he worked to save Skyler Coffield's life. She was a young woman who had been gunned down at close range by some man that the police are in the process of hunting down. They rolled her into the nearest O.R. and Jesse grabbed the paddles, placing them on her chest. "CLEAR!" Her lifeless body was propelled off the stretcher by the electric charge. He waited for a pulse, but recieved nothing. He scrame for them to increase the charge and tried again. "CLEAR!"
Still no reply.

Again and again he tried, doing everything he knew to do, but it was all to no avail.

After a few minutes of relentless work, one of the nurses placed a warm hand on his arm to stop him. "She's gone."

He peered over her, obviously upset by the loss. "Mark time of death as," glancing at his watch he continued. "ten o' clock am. Cause of death, heart failure, several gunshot wounds to the lower abdomen and chest."

"Yes Doctor."

No one argued. Jesse had put up a damn good fight. He was definately one of the best.

About an hour later, Jesse caught up with Dr. Amanda Bentley, the pathologist at Community General Hospital.

"Amanda, did you find out anything about Coffeild?"

"What? No 'hello'? No 'good morning Amanda'?" she replied.

"Sorry. Let me start over. Good morning Amanda. How are you?"

"Good, thankyou. And you?"

"Eh...so did you find out anything?" Jesse quickly got back to the subject.

"Not really. There wasn't anything in her blood and I haven't gotten the tox screen back yet. The cause of her death is pretty obvious though. She was gunned down."

"Yeah..."

"The only things that were on her were a ring and this phone number." Amanda pulled a plastic baggy from a file in her path lab and handed it to him. There was a diamond ring and a small white slip of paper in it. The slip of paper read: Eve Malone 228) 387-6655

"Ok, thanks."

"I was thinking you could call it and see if you can get a lead on the murderer." She suggested.

"Alright. Talk to you later." Jess agreed.

"Bye Jesse."

* * * * * * * *

Dr. Paige Hilton was walking by the front desk when she spotted Jesse waving to her. He seemed to be in a hurry which wasn't unusual for him.

"Oh Paige, I'm glad I caught you. I've got a patient waiting for me, can you call this number and ask for Eve Malone. Find out how she knows Skyler Coffield and see if she can maybe come down to the hospital."

"Sure. No problem Jess."

"Thanks. I'll see you later."

"Ok." Paige picked up the phone and dialed the number on the slip of paper. "Skyler Coffield, Skyler Coffield." she whispered to herself to make sure she would remember what to say.

Eve was just getting out of the shower when she heard the phone ringing from her bedroom. She didn't even have time to dry off before she had to go pick it up.

"Hello?" she answered winded.

"Yes, this is Dr. Paige Hilton from Community General Hospital. Is this Ms. Eve Malone?"

"Yes, is there something wrong?"

"I was calling to see how you knew Skyler Coffield."

Eve's heart lept into her throat at the sound of Skyler's name. "We're best friends. Why? What's wrong?"

"Ms. Coffield passed away about an hour ago. I'm very sorry."

"Wha-, of what? How..."

"She was gunned down at her home about an hour and a half ago. She suffered several gunshot wounds and we were unable to revive her after she had gone into cardiac arrest. I truely am sorry to have to bring you this horrible news."

Eve couldn't believe what she was hearing. She had just talked to Skyler last night before she went to bed. This had to be a joke.

"Ms. Malone? Ms. Malone... Miss are you alright?" Paige's voice rung out from the other end of the line.

"Yes, I'm, I'm still here." a tear fell from her eye as she slid to the floor.

"I'm sorry to ask you this, but, would you mind coming down to the hospital to answer a few questions for us?"

"Uh, yeah, I'll be there in thirty minutes."

"Thankyou."

"Um, can I see her, her body I mean? Can I do that?"

"Are you sure you want to?" Paige was surprised by her comment.

"Yeah. I'll explain later."

"Alright. I'll see you when you get here Ms. Malone."

"Bye."

After they got off the phone, Eve sat for a few minutes trying to get what she was just told to sink in. It didn't seem like reality. It felt like a bad dream she couldn't wake up from or something. She just wanted to die. 'Brian', she tought to herself,'Brian did this. That son of a bitch'.

* * * * * * * *

At the hospital, Eve asked around and a nurse lead her to the pathology lab. She walked in and there was a tall, long, blonde-headed woman with big, brown eyes and another woman with beautiful, brown skin, shoulder-length, dark brown, almost black hair pulled back with a headband and brown eyes.

They both turned around when Eve entered the room and immediatly the blonde-headed woman reached out her arms and engulfed her in a huge hug. To be honest, that was just what she needed.

The woman pulled away and introduced herself and her friend. "I'm Dr. Paige Hilton, we spoke on the phone, and this is Dr. Amanda Bentley, our pathologist here at CG. How are you?"

"I'm doing the best I can."

"That's good. You know, we're here for you if you need us."

Eve was overwhelmed by Paige's generosity. How could someone be so nice to some stranger they just met?

"Thankyou. I really appreaciate it."

"We can get started as soon as Dr. Travis gets here. He operated on Ms. Coffield." Amanda added.

Just then a man with blonde hair and beautiful blue eyes walked through the door.

"Hello, I'm Dr. Jesse Travis. You must be Eve Malone." He reached his hand out to shake hers.

She returned the gesture suddenly feeling this surge of emotion, but it left just as soon as it came, leaving them both a little bit flustered.

"It's nice to meet you." she studdered.

AND SO THEY MEET.

(Part two is coming!)
