Author: Jessetfan

Rated: PG
Challenge: 36) I would love to see Steve find out that he has a daughter in her early 20's. I also think that before he finds out he has a daughter that she starts dating Jesse. i think that it should be a funny, thought provoking and at times even sad. Why didn't Steve know about his daughter? What kind of childhood did she have? Maybe by the time Steve finds out Mark is already close to her, maybe Steve is too. How does she react to finding out? how does Jesse handle dating his best friends daughter? How does Steve handle it? -- Karen Meisel

It was about midnight in the ER and Jesse was working a double shift. Not paying attention to where he was going Jesse bumped into a med student working overnight. The girl fell over in surprise not that she had been hit hard.

"I am so sorry," Jesse said helping the girl up.

"I'm fine, Doctor, no harm done," replied the girl.

"That's good. Well, how 'bout to make up for this you go with me to get a cup of coffee in the doctors' lounge? By the way I'm Jesse Travis. What's your name?" Jesse asked.

"I'm Lindsay Breirwood, and could really use a cup of coffee." said the girl.

Lindsay was happy to meet someone. She was new in LA and didn't know many people. The new couple chatted on the way to and in the doctors' lounge. After about twenty minutes Jesse asked Lindsay out for the following evening. Lindsay gratefully accepted. Secretly glad Jesse had bumped into her. She had never had much luck with guys.

The next evening Jesse hurried to shave, shower, and dress. He went to pick up Lindsay and they went to dinner. During dinner they discussed such things as why Lindsay left Boston she explained to Jesse how much she hated the cold and snow. It being February Jesse knew it would be cold where he had come from in Indiana there should be plenty of snow there too. After dinner Jesse took Lindsay home he had had a great evening.

Lindsay had had a wonderful evening and was hoping she'd met Prince Charming in LA. She knew she hadn't had much luck with guys because she was quite the fireball out spoken and refusing to be controlled. She had been happy with Jesse she knew he had been content with just being with her. Lindsay was now sorry she hadn't told Jesse the whole truth of her purpose in LA. She wanted to meet her father Steve. Lindsay didn't know much about this man from what her mother said all she knew was that he was a police officer. The man Steve had always been a sore subject with her mother but she had to meet him. Her mother always said he'd wanted nothing to do with her but that couldn't be true. It just couldn't. Her father had to be proud of all she'd done what she'd become that was why she was doing everything. She wanted a father.

When Jesse walked into BBQ Bobs after dropping Lindsay off he wasn't surprised to find Steve Sloan, Amanda Bentley, and Mark Sloan sitting together at a table in the corner. Mark Sloan and Amanda Bentley were both doctors at CGH with Jesse and Steve was a cop. Jesse loved to tag along with Steve they were partners in BBQ Bobs and Jesse liked to think he helped Steve solve murder cases. Jesse liked to help even though he didn't always follow Steve's directions on how to help. Jesse always wished Mark was his dad because his own dad had been a spy and Jesse had really never known him that well. Amanda was like a sister to Jesse they had been through a lot together and it had all made their bond stronger.

Jesse walk over to the group and sat down in an empty chair. They were discussing the up coming pathologists' convention that Amanda would be attending. Jesse had never understood Amanda's love for what she did. He knew though that she was always helpful to Steve more than he could ever be. Jesse was all smiles over his date with Lindsay. From the time Jesse walked over the conversation was as follows.

"Hey, guys how are you?" Jesse asked

"We're fine. Discussing the convention I'm going to." Amanda replied.

Steve broke in, "Hey, Jess did you just get your teeth cleaned?"

"No," Jesse said "where would you suggest getting my teeth cleaned around 11:30 at night?"

"Well, I really didn't I just figured I'd ask considering you're all smiles," Steve said.

"Well, Mr. Smarty pants, I just came from a date with Lindsay Breirwood. She is one of the most terrific girls I've ever met."

"Oh the new med student at the hospital," Mark said. "She's a wonderful girl I'm one of instructors. Top grades in her class too."

"Well, she came from Boston because she didn't like the cold. I think I might have met Snow White or Sleeping Beauty." Jesse said.

"Well," Amanda said, "I hope this Snow White or Sleeping Beauty isn't like most of Steve's."

"Hey," Steve said, "I have met some nice girls give me some credit for the girls who were killed. And stopped giving me so much credit for girls like Maeve or the FBI agent. I have met girls like Randi."

"Ah yes, girls like Randi," Amanda said, "girls like Randi have caused you plenty of problems such as spilling soup on your pants, stealing your badge, and having mimes murdered in their beds. Isn't she also the one the who caused you to destroy to the undercover police work for your own department?"

"Well yes girls like Randi can do that, but there's always girls, but there's always girls like the one I met all the cruise ship." Steve said.

"Pharmacists to get mistakenly arrested for murder?" Amanda said.

"Well Lindsay isn't like all those girls Steve dated she's not like anyone not even Susan." Jesse said.

" Well hopefully not like Susan," Mark said, "you'll be suffering from another case of broken heart syndrome."

"You know certainly well that Susan ran off because we were never meant for each other." Jesse said.

"Well I guess I'll quit while I'm behind," Steve said, "because I have to get up early in the morning. All see what home Dad."

"See ya," everyone said in unison.

The next morning Lindsay went to the police station she wanted to start immediately to find her father. When she was greeted by the officer at the front desk she asked where she could find her father. The officer asked for her father's name and such when she replied Steve to the name and couldn't answer many of the other questions the officer asked if her father was a missing person.

"I don't think so," Lindsay replied.

"What do you mean you don't think so?" questioned the officer.

"Well," Lindsay said, "I've never met him. You see right after I was born my mother moved to Boston. I've always wanted to meet him. My mom mentioned once that when I was born he was a police officer. I know his name is Steve but nothing else."

"Well, there might be a way to find him if you answer some questions about yourself we can narrow down a search to officers who were on the force the year of your birth. How old are you? And what did you say your father's name was?" The officer asked.

"I'm twenty-seven. And I said my father's name was Steve. I was born in 1972. My birthday is May 11th." Lindsay said.

"Okay," the officer said, "We can search to find a Steve who was on the force twenty-seven years ago. Here we are there's three of them Steve Millard, Steve Sloan, and Steve Pleancy. You can see each of them at different locations. I'll tell you the precincts they work at and their hours after that it's up to you."

"Thank you very much. This is very helpful." said Lindsay.

After Lindsay had gotten the print out of the precincts and hours each of the three worked she headed to meet Steve Millard. She was happy that each of them worked days so she didn't have to run all over the city at night. When she arrived at the precinct at which Steve Millard worked and asked the officer at the desk where she could find him. She didn't have much trouble and was happy to find him at his desk.

Lindsay walked over and asked him, "Did you ever know a girl named Jackie Breirwood?"

"Well, we're pretty straight forward and her with a purpose aren't we miss?" Officer Millard said.

"Excuse me, please." said Lindsay, "I'm Dr. Lindsay Breirwood and I am here with a purpose I looking for my father."

"Well, Dr. Breirwood I never knew a girl named Jackie Breirwood. I'm sorry." said Officer Millard.

"Thanks anyway," said Lindsay getting up to leave.

"Goodbye and good luck," said Officer Millard.

Lindsay's next stop was the precinct of Steve Sloan. She hoped he was the one so she didn't have to drive across the city to see Steve Pleancy. When she arrived at her destination she parked and got out of her car. Once inside she asked the officer at the desk where she could find Steve Sloan. She had no trouble finding him.

"Hello, I'm Lindsay Breirwood. Did you ever know a girl named Jackie Breirwood?" asked Lindsay.

"I'm Lt. Steve Sloan. Yes, I did we dated many years ago. Why do you ask?" asked Steve.

"It's a long story. I'll take you to dinner after you finish working and explain it all to you. If you want me too." said Lindsay.

"Sure, this has to be interesting but I promised my dad we could go to dinner if you would like to join us. If you have someone you would like to bring that would be fine." Steve said.

"No, thanks any way this is something you will definitely want to hear privately." Lindsay remarked.

"Okay, how about we meet for dinner sometime next week?" Steve asked.

"All right, how 'bout Wednesday?" asked Lindsay.

"Wednesday would be fine. Where do you want to meet?" asked Steve.

"What about the little Chinese buffet in Chinatown?" asked Lindsay.

"Great," said Steve, "I love Chinese food want to meet around eight?"

"Sounds like a plan," said Lindsay, "I'll see you Wednesday."

Lindsay was glad as she left to know she'd found what she was looking for. She knew it was a lot to hope that he would even care that he had a daughter twenty-seven years later. Her hope was that he would think better late than never.

* * *

At dinner that night Steve could think of little else but the strange visit by Lindsay. He wondered what she wanted to tell him that he needed to hear alone. Steve knew that mysterious strangers could be dangerous, but somehow Lindsay seemed like the girl he'd known so many years ago. Jackie had shoulder length brown hair, she was petite, Jackie was always slender, sparkling eyes that looked like deep pools of beautiful blue water took over her face, the best quality Steve thought about Jackie was that when she smiled, which was most of the time, she glowed like a princess. Jackie was the most beautiful girl Steve had ever met. Lindsay's physical properties looked nothing like her mother. She looked much like Steve, right down to the smile. Lindsay was a muscular girl who kept in shape and loved to run. She had a beautiful head of auburn hair cut stylishly. Lindsay was tall and quite beautiful in almost anyone's book. Even though she didn't resemble her mother Lindsay reminded Steve of Jackie through the way she carried herself and her gentle aura.

"Steve, Steve, Steve your soup is getting cold," Mark said.

"Sorry, Dad, I was just strolling down Memory Lane. Do you remember a girlfriend of mine by the name of Jackie Breirwood?" Steve asked.

"Hmmmmm…………Jackie is the one whom you lost contact with why do you ask?" Mark answered Steve's question with one of his own.

"Her daughter came to the station today looking for me. I don't know why you see she said she needed to talk to me about something we're going for Chinese food Wednesday because she said that what she needed to say needed to be said in private. I hope nothing has happened to Jackie, that would be the worst." said Steve.

"Her daughter must have been trying pretty hard to find you. You dated Jackie twenty-seven years ago so if something had happened she probably wouldn't have tried so hard maybe she needs to talk to you about herself." Mark said.

Steve didn't hear his father's suggestion about what was going on he was in another time and place. It was early in his career he had just met the girl of his dreams. Steve wanted to marry her. He knew he couldn't afford a ring right away and had no way to pay for the big wedding he wanted. He loved her so much. How could he tell her this without a ring and a wedding? He finally came up with the perfect way. He blindfolded her made sure both of them had the weekend off and took her to a hotel on the beach. She loved it. He loved it. He remembered this time fondly even though he tried to forget. About a month later Jackie moved leaving no forwarding address or phone number for Steve. He was devastated. Why, why why? This was the question he kept asking himself. Why hadn't he proposed? Why did she leave without a trace? Why didn't she love him?

"Steve, Steve, Steve, we came to dinner together, do you want to talk about it?" Mark asked.

"No, Dad, I think I need to find out what happened to Jackie. Wednesday is so far away for a lost love."

Jesse was at the jewellery store picking out a ring. He had known Lindsay less than a week but this was what he knew he had to do. He planned to propose Thursday night at dinner. He chose a beautiful ring with a heart shaped sapphire with a diamond on either side. He thought she would love it. He knew there was a reason he didn't marry Susan Hilliard he just didn't know what now he did. Jesse wanted to settle down, get married, and have kids, but to do that he needed a princess like Lindsay.

At dinner Wednesday night Lindsay made small talk and then she began to tell Steve her entire life story.

"I know it's kind of weird for someone to walk in off the street and ask you to dinner but I have something important to tell you, but before I do promise not to interrupt," said Lindsay.

"All right," Steve said still puzzled by what was happening.

"Okay, why I asked you to dinner alone without a date without a friend is because I wanted to tell you," Lindsay began sobbing, "you're my father." Lindsay looked up and from Steve's puzzled expression jumped into an explanation the best she could, " Okay, I'm Jackie Breirwood's daughter. I came to LA to find my father. You are the man I found who knows Jackie Breirwood. My mother never married she felt you never wanted me so she was the only one who did. Steve Sloan the man I came in search of fortunately for me I found someone who wants me." Lindsay had begun shouting and the private conversation had become not so private, "When you abandoned my mother you ruined two lives, hers and mine. I thought if I was a doctor and a good one you would want me."

Finally with Lindsay finished Steve had a chance to say, "I didn't know you ever were your mom abandoned me. I loved her and wanted to marry her. The only way I would have known is if she told me and she didn't. How did you find me?"

"My mom slipped a few things accidentally I went on those. She mentioned once that you were a cop and that your name was Steve. After that a little research at police headquarters and a little luck." Now Lindsay's hysteria had disappeared and she spoke as if nothing had happened.

"If your mom had told me she was pregnant things would be different but since she didn't we have to work with what we have. I would like to have a fair chance to be the father you never had. And one more thing I'm sorry I ruined your life." said Steve warmly.

"I'm sorry that an apology doesn't erase twenty-seven years of not knowing you but I'd like to try to love you this will be a good second chance for both of us," Lindsay said.

"I'm glad you found me I really wasn't hiding," Steve said.

"So am I. May I tell you about what happened while I didn't know you? By the way, I need some time to forgive you completely." said Lindsay.

"I'd love to hear about your life, and I know it takes time," said Steve.

"Mom moved to Boston when I was six months old," began Lindsay, "I spent all my life there up to this term of med-school. I know Mom worked really hard for me to do all the things I wanted for school. I was ranked 5th in the nation in high school girls track, I was senior class president, I did drama, and I attended Harvard."

"It's quite impressive to have a daughter who has done so much with her life. Where did you say you were attending med-school?" Steve asked.

"Community General Hospital, my favorite teacher is Dr. Mark Sloan," Lindsay replied.

"Oh my gosh, my father knows my daughter better than I do," said Steve.

"Wait a minute, Mark Sloan is your father, that would make him my grandfather," Lindsay said.

"I don't want to tell people right away," Steve said, "Why don't you come to my house Friday night and I'll tell my father and two close friends and you can meet them."

"All right that's a good way to go I'd say. I think that would be fine," said Lindsay.

The two parted company shortly afterward Steve gave Lindsay directions to the beach house and she promised to be there. Steve was glad to meet Lindsay, but was scared to be her father. Being a father was something that he hadn't thought about. After Jackie he'd had a string of unsuccessful romances so he had never thought of being a father.

Jesse gazed into Lindsay's eyes Thursday at dinner. He was excited to be asking the girl of his dreams to marry him.

"Lindsay," Jesse said, "I know I've known you only a few days, but I love you and want to spend the rest of my life with you. I know that you are the most wonderful person I've ever met and asking you to be mine is the best way to express my love for you. Will you marry me?"

"Jesse, I would love to be your wife," Lindsay said.

Jesse slipped the ring he'd chosen around Lindsay's finger happily he'd just done the best thing of his life. Lindsay smiled broadly being someone's wife meant being protected and loved that's what she wanted the dinner continued quietly.

"Mark, I'm engaged," Jesse said excitedly the next day.

"Oh, Jesse, congratulations, who's the lucky girl?" Mark asked.

"Lindsay Breirwood," Jesse replied.

"Jesse, would you come over for dinner tonight?" Mark asked "Steve said there's someone he wants us to meet."

"Sure, don't tell me Steve's engaged too," Jesse said.

"Well, Jesse, I don't know, Steve won't tell me," Mark replied, "Ask Amanda to come too if you see her."

That evening at dinner this is what happened. Jesse was first to arrive, followed by Amanda, and Lindsay was last to arrive. When Lindsay arrived Jesse kissed her.

"Would you please keep your lips to yourself," Steve said to Jesse it was more of a command than a request.

"Steve, take it easy, we are engaged you know," Jesse replied.

"Oh, Jesse we have a little problem here could I talk to you in the other, please," Steve said.

"Jesse, I'm glad you love her but there's something I need to tell you about your fiancee. She's my daughter." Steve said.

"Oh my, Steve, I didn't know. I thought she was just my perfect wife," Jesse said.

"Well, it's okay. Just keep your mouth shut about who she is around Dad and Amanda. She's the one I wanted everyone to meet." Steve said, "But I guess you already know her."

Mark had made a wonderful dinner and everyone else was out on the back deck setting things out. Jesse and Steve joined them.

"Could I say something to everyone," Steve said to get everyone's attention, "As you know I asked you all here to meet someone so may I introduce my daughter, Lindsay Breirwood. Just so everyone knows I'm going to be Jesse's father-in-law."
